Emails can be intercepted and the contents changed before delivering the corrupted message back to the recipient.
A company gets an invoice from its suppliers to pay money for a transaction. The suppliers email account gets hacked and the bank details are changed. This is forwarded to the company for payment and the money is paid into the criminals account, the supplier is non the wiser and they are still waiting for payment.
This is called email spoofing. A simple check using outlook can help you spot a fake email
